Regional Information
Horohoro is a rural settlement located about 15 kilometers southwest of Rotorua, in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region. Nestled at the base of the Horohoro Bluffs, the area is renowned for its scenic beauty, with lush farmlands, native bush, and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Horohoro Bluffs, rising dramatically above the plains, are a key geological feature, formed by ancient volcanic activity. The region offers a peaceful, countryside setting and attracts visitors seeking tranquility away from the bustle of tourist-heavy Rotorua.
The area is also steeped in Māori history and culture. Horohoro holds significance to local iwi (tribes), particularly Ngāti Raukawa and Tuhourangi. In Māori tradition, the bluffs are associated with the legendary hero Hatupatu, who is said to have hidden there from the mythical bird-woman Kurangaituku. While primarily known for farming, Horohoro has outdoor activities such as walking and horse trekking that allow visitors to explore its picturesque surroundings. Its proximity to Rotorua makes it a convenient retreat for those interested in both nature and cultural experiences.
